Honeymoon Pool is a small, quiet camping ground near the river in Collie. There are 22 camping places and in addition an area for people who come for the day only. The grounds are designed for camping only, which means that caravans and campervans can’t be used. There are 3 toilets (flush-able ones too!) and the camping spots are spread along the Collie River. If you pick a good spot, you can be sleeping under 15 meters away from the river edge. About two months ago I went down to Honeymoon Pool for a weekend, and had a heap of fun. We just took basic gear, had a fire each night and did a bit of fishing and four wheel driving.
Location and Drive

You can get to Collie from Perth in just over 2 hours. Like I mentioned in my previous post about Dunsborough, you can travel down the new highway which runs from Perth to Bunbury and then cut across to Collie, or you can drive down the South Western Highway. Honeymoon Pool is similar in many ways to Dwellingup, and in some ways I think it’s even more enjoyable. Collie itself has some amazing things to see, and the flora and fauna are great.
General information

When we were there, firewood was available, but whether or not they provide it on a regular basis throughout the year I can't say. The ranger’s don’t like you picking things out of the bush (and most of it is either alive or wet), so make sure you bring a bit of firewood and also some fire starters. Lots of newspaper can work magic when it’s very wet! There is untreated water available on tap (not for drinking), and rubbish is picked up from a bin fairly regularly. There is a small charge to camp in the area, and the ranger will come around in the morning sometime to collect it. It’s only a few dollars per head each day. There are discounts for children and seniors. The money goes towards maintaining the campgrounds and rubbish collections.

I was more interested in the 4x4 side of things, as you can see from the pictures below! It’s important to find out where you are allowed to go though, because being a national park, there are limits on the area’s that you can drive. On the first afternoon there, I veered off the track and got very bogged. A helpful local went and got his tractor and another four wheel drive, to pull me out. I guess that will teach me to walk the track before driving it. The next day the ranger mentioned to us that where we had been driving was off limits anyway; oops.

You can see our set up to the side. Many people don’t like Camping, but it’s usually because they are not comfortable enough. If you really put the time and effort into setting things up right, you can have a very enjoyable and comfortable trip. Today, you can get the luxuries you want and still enjoy nature! You can even get hot water systems to have showers with out of your car; how good is that! The weather plays a huge role in making your trip enjoyable. This means picking the right time to go down. It can be very cold in Collie, so make sure you pack some seriously warm clothes if you are going down in winter or spring.

I very much enjoy just getting away from it all, and relaxing near the river. If you are into fishing, you can get a freshwater license (unless you are under 16 years old) and try your luck for some fish. You can catch Red Fin Perch, Trout and various other species. We had no luck, but to be honest didn’t really give it much of a fair chance. The wildlife in the area is fun to watch, ranging from ducks and their little ducklings right through to all sorts of birds and mammals. Also, be aware that the wildlife have gotten used to regular visitors, and have worked out how to open packets of chips and other bits of goodies; don’t leave your food lying around!

Wellington dam is a great place to drive out to and to have a walk around. This provides much needed water to farmers, and also runs into the Collie River. It has just recently overflowed, which has lifted the Collie River quite a bit! It’s amazing to watch the water flow out so quickly, and you can even get a bit wet standing on the cross road under the bridge. There are also a heap of other places around Honeymoon Pool that you can visit and take a look at.
It was only a few months ago that I first went into Honeymoon Pool, and you can be sure that I will be going back again. There is plenty to do, lots to see and a heap of fun to have! The best part about it is that it’s a very cheap holiday and also close to Perth. It truly is the perfect weekend getaway. Other great getaways close to Perth include Lancelin and Wedge Island.

You will be able to get in with a 2wd no worries. They are just gravel roads. It is an awesome spot for a quiet, relaxing weekend away.

You do not need to book; it works on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. You can ring the DEC for availability though.
